Avery tied with Socrates for money raised

Yes, the philosopher who has been dead for centuries has posted the same amount of money raised as our very own Craig Avery –    $ zero.

Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center’s Rock-A-Thon is on for Friday, and no money has been pledged for the Hub’s Tub.

So much for friendship and community support.  Come on people, what does it take?

HOW ‘BOUT EVERYONE WE TALKED UP ON THE SOAPBOX KICK IN A BUCK?

HOW ‘BOUT EVERY PERSON WHO EVER PARKED IN OUR LOT TO MAIL A LETTER AT THE MAIN ST. POST OFFICE PLEDGE THE AMOUNT OF A FIRST CLASS STAMP?

HOW ‘BOUT ANY PAINTERS, PLUMBERS, CARPENTERS, ELECTRICIANS WHO EVER GOT A CHECK FROM ERDCO DEVELOPMENT SEND ME FIVE DOLLARS BACK?

Oh, I get it. It’s a surprise party tomorrow! That’s right.  No wonder no one pledged any money. You’re all gonna be there tomorrow (Friday the 27th) at 12:00 noon to throw the money at me and sing “Viva la Vida.” So, nevermind. See you then!

NFMMC upper lobby, noon, throw money, sing , see ya (or feel the shame and hit comment below to pledge or send us an email)

Blotter roundup: Woman denied sex from boyfriend smashes windshield; policeman hit with sex toy

It’s been an interesting day for the national headlines, which we usually stay from here at The Hub, but two jumped out at us.

— This, first, from The Smoking Gun:

After her live-in boyfriend repeatedly rebuffed demands to have sex, a Florida woman allegedly attacked the man in their bedroom, chased him out of the house, and broke the windshield on his truck, police report.

Stacey Ann Ortiz, a 34-year-old waitress, was busted on a misdemeanor battery charge following the confrontation last Wednesday morning at the Port St. Lucie residence the couple has shared for the last seven months.

As detailed in a Port St. Lucie Police Department report, Ortiz and her beau, 27, quarreled after returning home from a night of drinking at a pal’s house. While Ortiz sought to have sex, her boyfriend wanted to “lie in bed and watch TV.”

— Also, and this one comes via the Watertown Daily Times, Watertown police charged Lisa M. Anderson, 47, of 321 Stone St., Apt. 3, with harassment early Wednesday for allegedly throwing a sex toy at an officer.

The instrument struck Officer Jonathan M. Pitts in the forehead, police said.

Celebrate Obscura Day at the Niagara Science Museum

Organized by the folks behind Atlas Obscura, Obscura Day is an international celebration of unusual places and hidden wonders in your own hometown and an opportunity for the young and old to have hands-on experience of historic scientific equipment at the Niagara Science Museum.

The Atlas Obscura is a compendium of the world’s wonders, curiosities, and esoterical; and it rates the Niagara Science Museum as the Top Museum in the area and the Fourth Best “Thing to Do” in Niagara Falls.

Physicist and Niagara Science Museum curator Nicolas Dalacu is having a free, open house at his labor of love at 3625 Highland Avenue in Niagara Falls, NY to celebrate Obscura Day on Saturday, April 28, 2012 between 12:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. To generate more interest in the future of science, by understanding scientific principles and early equipment, Dalacu is particularly interested in, “talented, inquisitive students, their caring science teachers and parents for an afternoon of ‘building scientific minds,’” said Dalacu.

Dalacu has opened his museum to elementary school classes in the past, whose participation has been a successful, inexpensive outward bound benefit to them and believes that in continually doing so he can help to improve the quality of education in the region.

The Niagara Science Museum can be reached from Niagara Thruway exit 24 to west on Witmer Road (Rte 31) for 1.1-miles, crossing Hyde Park Boulevard (RTE 61) and continuing through the intersection onto College Avenue (Rte 31) for 0.4-miles to left on Highland Avenue. There is both ample on-street parking and parking behind the museum.

Call for additional information, if necessary.

Falls hotel has 34 tubs stolen

The theft of copper piping has been one that’s ramped up in Niagara County in recent months, but here’s a new twist:

Dozens of bathtubs were reported stolen Monday from the underground parking garage of a Niagara Falls hotel that is being renovated.

The Days Inn on Main Street reported that a total of 34 old tubs that were being stored in plain sight in an underground garage are all missing.

The tubs are valued at approximately $80 apiece.
